Dr. Daniel O’Brien, a leading joint health researcher and physiotherapist, sat down with broadcast icon Judy Bailey to discuss his breakthrough realisation that exercise is medicine for our joints, regardless of age.

During the interview, Dr. O’Brien shared a story from the early days of his career about a 79-year-old Welsh patient who had been deemed too sick for joint replacement surgery and had been told by his GP that there was nothing they could do for him

Despite having little knowledge or experience treating typical joint conditions at this stage in his career, Dr. O’Brien decided to treat the patient like one of his rugby players, taking him through some strength exercises and basic bike exercises

To his surprise, after just six weeks, the patient reported feeling better, and his knee was no longer causing the same problems it was before. What was even more impactful for Dr. O’Brien was when the patient’s wife told him that he was ‘happier’.

“Turns out I was a bit grumpy because of my knee, and now I’m happier,” the patient said to Dr. O’Brien. This experience made Dr. O’Brien realise that his work as a physiotherapist could positively impact people’s lives beyond just their physical health.

Dr. O’Brien’s story is a testament to the power of exercise and the profound impact it can have on one’s physical and emotional well-being. As he continues to research and advocate for exercise as a form of medicine, countless individuals stand to benefit from his discoveries and the knowledge he has gained.

Whether you are young or old, Dr. O’Brien’s work reminds us all of the importance of taking care of our bodies and minds through regular exercise. So go ahead, lace up those sneakers and get moving. Your body (and mind) will thank you for it.
