The ex-farmer who still bikes to the top
The hills were right there. Every morning, Mike could see them from his kitchen window – the communication towers on top, 750 metres up. He’d bought this twenty-acre block specifically so he could ride up there.
But his knees had other ideas.
Mike had spent eighteen and a half years farming sheep in Canterbury. Crutching, drenching, working the races. In his last few years there, they’d switched to composite sheep. They were faster, more productive, and definitely more feisty.
“You’re pinning them between your legs all day,” he says. “Hundreds of them. And these composites, they don’t stand still. They’ll fight you.”

By the time he came off the farm and retired to his lifestyle block, his knees had taken the punishment of nearly two decades of that work.
“My knees felt sort of worn out,” the 58-year-old says.
Retirement was supposed to be different. He’d done his time. Eighteen and a half years of hard graft, and now he had this place in North Canterbury with hills out the back door, waiting to be explored with his mountain bike. That was the plan. Get fit, stay active, enjoy what he’s worked for.
Instead, Mike found himself looking up at those hills and wondering if he’d ever make it to the top.
The gradient near the summit kicks up to twenty-two degrees. The shingle loosens under your tyres. If you don’t get your balance right, the front wheel comes up on you.
And that is not a climb for dodgy knees. That’s a climb that punishes any weakness.
“I was still able to do things,” Mike says. “But I was limited to just having to manage.”

He’d tried ice gel after the rides he could manage. Synthetic creams when things really flared up. They helped a bit, but nothing made a real difference. Some of them he found weren’t even recommended for long-term use.
The hills were still there every morning. And every morning, Mike wondered if this was it – if he’d bought this place just to look at what he couldn’t do.
Managing his block was hard enough. The dream of the bike in the hills was slowly becoming only a dream.
Then one evening, scrolling through the computer, an ad popped up. A cream called Koru FX. Made in New Zealand. Natural ingredients.
“I thought I’d give it a go,” Mike says. “I had nothing to lose but everything to gain if it helped me.”
He ordered a bottle, not expecting much. He’d been disappointed before.
The next morning, he rubbed it on and forgot about it. Later, out in the sheep run on his block, he climbed off one of the sheep, up the wooden fence, and jumped down without thinking. He remembers grimacing. That impact of landing on the concrete would usually cause no end of grief.
He frowned as he straightened up, realising that this time he wasn’t in trouble.
“It wasn’t until later that I realised I had done something different that day,” he reflects. “It became more apparent over time that the Koru FX seemed to be working better than anything else I had been using.”

Mike started taking the cream with him on rides. Small bottle, tucked under the seat of his bike. Applied it before he set off, sometimes again when he got back. It became part of the routine.
And then he started climbing.
The weekly ride into the hills is still hard work. Twenty-two degrees is twenty-two degrees. But with his knees supported, Mike’s not just surviving the climb; he’s mastering it.
“When I first went up there, if you don’t get your balance right, the front wheel will come up on you,” he explains. “But now I’ve got to the stage where I can pump the back tyre up a bit tighter and still keep that nice balance. I can actually get on the shingle and still have good grip.”
It’s a technical detail, but it means everything. Tighter tyre pressure requires more confidence in your body, more trust that you can hold the balance, absorb the terrain, and keep pushing when the gradient fights back.
“The Koru FX has really given me more confidence to do things I wanted to do,” Mike says.
He’s up there now once a week. Fifty, sixty times and counting. From 230 metres above sea level at his place to 750 metres at the communication towers on top.
Without Koru FX? Mike knows exactly what that would look like. It would look like standing in the kitchen, coffee in hand, staring at hills you can’t climb. It would look like a retirement spent managing instead of living. It would look like giving up on the thing you bought the place to do.
His advice to anyone thinking about trying it?
“Just give it a go,” he says. “Because you might be surprised. I tried ice gel and all that. But geez, it’s so much better than any of that stuff.”
For Mike, the hills aren’t getting any smaller. But that’s not going to stop him anymore.

But how is it possible for a little-known Kiwi cream to be building such a following?
The secret is in Koru FX’s unique formula, unlike anything else currently available.
It harnesses 16 natural oils. Black pepper, nutmeg and rosemary widen surface vessels so nutrients can pass through the dermal layer; peppermint, eucalyptus and mānuka trigger a rapid cooling of over-excited nerve endings; antioxidants such as calendula and chamomile then flood joints with polyphenols for hours of comfort.
The approach is based on Nobel-winning science by American biochemist David Julius, who showed that botanical compounds like peppermint can modulate temperature-sensing nerve channels that influence pain signalling.
By working with our bodies built in signalling system, the makers of Koru FX have been able to deliver the fast-acting, long-lasting comfort people are looking for – but without all the nasties.

Professional sports trainer Ricki Jacobs says this sort of joint and muscle relief often delivers wider benefits too. “When people can move without fearing a flare-up, their confidence, social life and even sleep rebound just as quickly,” he notes.
Koru Nutrition, the Christchurch company behind the product, offers a 60-day money-back guarantee acknowledging that everyone is unique and has different challenges when it comes to joint health.
“I think it’s really important people can try Koru FX for themselves with the peace of mind of 60-days to give it a really good go.”
“There’s no such thing as a silver-bullet but this way people can know if it works for them just as it has for thousands of others,” says André Linton, Managing Director of Koru Nutrition.
For those who want to give it a try, Koru Nutrition are offering readers discounts of up to 40 per cent.
Many users are already taking advantage of the multi-offer saying, “I’ve got no intention of missing another song sitting to the side.”

What makes Koru FX #1 for Joint Relief?
What makes Koru FX so effective is its unique blend of 16 essential oils and plant extracts, carefully selected to work together in perfect synergy. Ingredients like peppermint and eucalyptus provide deep, antioxidant support, while nutmeg and black pepper extract supercharges the absorption process. These key elements help dilate the skin, allowing the soothing nutrients to penetrate faster and reach the joints where they’re needed most.
Deep Absorption
Fast-Acting Comfort
This advanced absorption technique was first discovered by David Julius, an American biochemist, who won a Nobel Prize in 2021 for his groundbreaking research on how the body perceives pain. Koru Nutrition has since applied his findings to develop New Zealand’s most effective natural joint relief cream.
It’s this fast-acting, deeply penetrating formula that’s turning people from a sceptic into believer – with thousands of Kiwis trusting Koru FX every single day.
